Once a man was walking in the park when he came across a penguin. He took him to a policeman and said ‘I just found this penguin’, ‘what should I do’? The policemen replied, ‘take him to the zoo’. The next day the policemen s]aw the same man in the same park and the man was still carrying the penguin with him. The policemen was rather surprised and walked to the man and asked ‘why are you still carrying that penguin about? Didn’t you take it to the zoo?’ ‘I certainly did’ replied the man ‘and it was a great idea because he really enjoyed it so today I’m taking him to the movies!’
ANSWER
1. The systemic Functional approach is increasingly being recognized as providing a very useful descriptive and imperative framework for viewing language as a strategic, meaning making resource.
2. Four theoretical claims about language
- that language use is functional
- that its function is to make meanings
- that these meaning are influenced by the social and cultural context in which they are exchanged
- and that the process of using language is a semiotic process, a process of making meaning by choosing
